Final Review comments from Intensive week

• Sense of freedom inside – underlying agenda is about engaging a person in the building.
• Roof – different materials are capped by the same material on the same plane – produce multiple levels. How the building meets the sky will be very important
• Visual quality is seductive, emotionally connected.
• Carving into the ground – not sure about going down. Concept is right on, maybe reverse it. Go up instead of down so engagement is with Copley Square and not the store.
• Materials – laminated wood changes Ted’s concerns he was having, good way to invite people in.
• Bulk of the building is repelling people.
• Formal exploration of the shapes of the columns and roof
Quick studies with clay – shapes of the columns need to be explored much more.
• Window slot at back – mass is made a veneer, be careful
• References
o Renzo Piano – Malaysian tree forest
o Ventora – slicing his canvas painting
o Architectural Record – recent article on panels how they change the feel
• Really interesting start – keep going at a faster pace.
• Don’t get the interior of the building at all.
