Studio Final: Concept Statement

The Apple store at Copley Square shapes and promotes social interaction.

Movement through the site expresses the unique geometry shaping the front Southwest facade. This movement carries through the building and the flow of circulation similar to pedestrian social interaction within Copley Square creates interesting floor plates.

1. Package is very playful
• Wish the Architecture could be more interactive – similar to the packaging
• Apple is all about interaction
2. Columns
• Sorbrook and Hudson – they use color behind the glass, the façade is always changing.
• What is going on with the columns through the roof?
3. Look at the difference between hardware and software
• You have to carry through the idea of the package
• The building is a little disappointing compared to the package
4. “You’re going to be a great Architect”
• “Command your efforts”
5. The formal direction of the building is intriguing
• Not just the massing but the floor plan
• You have organic formalism mixed with a playful narrative
6. Plan movement
• The pendulum type motion works well with the erosion of the corner
7. You connected with the essence of the project
8. A formal comment – the unpacking and assembly were terrific.
9. The section needs to have the same ideas of the plan.
10. The columns could be more than a porcupine
• The would force movement and be more sculptural if they weren’t omni directional
• Connection with celestial dimension of apple
11. Columns
• They are structural but the need function also
• Hydraulics, lights, etc.
12. Boston is built on wooden piers
• This idea can be incorporated into the structure and idea of the columns of your building.
13. Comments from Ted
• You nailed the package
• Your building is all about the individual but your package was about a group. “I cringed when I heard grab a friend”
• “Skylight is a new element and I’m not sure about it.”
• The concept link between the building and the package is missing
• Rigor is needed
